In linguistic landscape (LL) studies, various projects have demonstrated how language learners benefit from tasks that involve the documentation and interpretation of the LL. In this chapter, we investigate how Finnish as a second language learner exchange students turned the local LL into affordances during their time abroad in Finland. The article discusses the research subject and the general tenets of one of the contemporary subdisciplines in linguistics, i.e. ecological linguistics (ecolinguistics) in its three main research areas: the ecology of languages, ethnolinguistics and linguistic ecology. To date, Polish-language teaching has not attempted to reinterpret the aims and content of education from a pro-ecological perspective, which is why this paper outlines various ways of including the issues of language ecology in Polish-language lessons, especially in terms of linguistic competence. An analysis of curricula shows that adopting this approach is possible even within the current mandatory framework.
